Me Beauty Turned Three

Ahoy Mateys! Our Little Bird turned three in November. As you can imagine, big day for her and even bigger day for Mom and Dad! Time has gone by so fast, it seems yesterday, we were looking at her with “deer in the headlight” looks and Oh Emm Gees of “what do we do with her?” And now… she is telling us “Happy Birthday to Ashlee, happy birthday to me!” So blessed!

Earlier in the year, Little Bird started to really engage and enjoy watching Jake and the Never Land Pirates on the Disney channel. She started using terms: gold doubloons, swashbuckler and yo ho ho – I quickly knew a pirate party was in store for us. What a great party theme for children, boy or girl, any age – a pirate is where it’s at!!!

Without further ado, I went to work, researching pirate parties, pirate treasures and all things that make a pirate party fun!

I found my pirate girl on a clipart website and immediately knew she would be the perfect “anchor” for my party! I was able to use her on all of my party goods, invitations and will be able to use her when I get to scrapbooking this major event.

I reached out to my fellow Twitter and Facebook communities to help me with the design elements of her party.

I also worked with Bella’s Bowtique to create a hair bow that a lucky little girl got to wear at my party… and no it wasn’t the birthday girl. It was a friend of mine’s daughter, Jaiden. Since then, her other daughter has been modeling for Bella’s Bowtique… oh the power of networking with powerful and creative women!

Speaking of talented women, Myriad Cake Design was the baker I chose to work with for this party. I met with Marion at her shop to discuss the theme of the party and my desire for a pirate cake that represented all of the party aspects. Within in moments she made my vision come to life… and what I loved most was she said, “Normally I have colored pencils so you can see what it will resemble… “ okay, who doesn’t love the idea of getting to use colored pencils in your every day work setting! That rocks!!!

As you can see from the pictures, she rocked it like a pro and the cake was delicious so who could ask for anything more!

So what’s a party without a little fun… a boring party… and we will have no boring parties on this momma’s watch! Break out the balloons and face paint please! Face painting at any age for any reason is a fun thing and this facepainter was amazing! Painted sleeves became the trend of the night and I bet some kids didn’t want to wash it off when they got home. My niece Regan told her Dad she couldnt sleep the night before because she was so excited to come to Ashlee's party - now that is what every event planner wants to hear!!!

Our balloon maker is a dear friend that I recently found out about her amazing talent. The kids went absolutely crazy about her balloons – anything they asked for, they got! So a very sincere thank you to Misty Hill for your amazing talent and sweetness to make so many children happy!!!

Party favors are important too! Normally, a small gift or treat is given out at parties to thank guests for coming. This year, I chose to lay out all the favors on a table and treasure chest and let kids pick what they like. I offered bandanas (pirate scarves) for everyone that came. I also had eye patches, swords, tons of candy, temporary tattoos and trinkets alike, all pure swashbuckler treasure!

I made the birthday banner, pirate ship sails, water bottle labels, party invitations and thank you notes. I purchased gold coins in massive quantities from Trader Joes. There were candy bars to load up on as well as soda's and more sweet treats!

Another favorite element of this party was the pirate cut out. A very good friend, Jordan designed, painted and constructed the pirate cut out for me! All the kids took turns getting their picture taken behind the Whimsical Pirate, it was so cute to see their happy faces peeking out.

I also ordered a cardboard pirate ship that everyone could color and play with. This was a bigger hit than that I ever thought it to be. All ages colored and all the little ones took it for a sail around the room!

From these pictures, you can clearly see that 72 people had a great time celebrating Captn Ashlee's third birthday.

From Momma and Daddy to Little Bird, we love you more than one could ever imagine. You are the most prized treasure that we love and will always be proud of! Happy 3rd Birthday Ashlee Jae, may you have many more and may all your wishes come true.

A huge thank you to Sandi Elle Photography for capturing these priceless moments and now treasured memories. Sandi is a kindred friend with amazing talent that she graciously shares with me, I am blessed to be surrounded by such amazing talent.

In closing, it is my mother and father that I thank the most for loving me with all their heart and providing me a foundation of life built on love and now I am paying that forward to my daughter.

A Little Pop in Your Corn

Little Bird loves popcorn! (I wonder where she gets that from?!) We decided to welcome fall and share of “our” love popcorn with family and friends.

I typed up a little note and copied it nine times and then formatted the page for three columns. With a minor amount of editing, I had 9 tags per page just like that!

I printed the tags onto sparkly paper adding just a little extra touch. I cut the nine tags out using a paper trimmer then decided to bring out the Slice and use a die cut to background the text before attaching to the actual tag. I love to layer up everything from cardstock to clothing J

If you decide to make this simple project, use any size tag, font, embellishments, etc. to personalize to your liking; I went for a simple harvest look since I was using burlap to wrap my popcorn bags. If using a different type of fabric, your tag may need a more embellished (fancy) tag and ribbon.

Line up the popcorn bag onto your fabric and cut so that it covers up the package. I used mini bags of popcorn and did not measure the dimensions - just set the bag on the fabric and created strips. I wrapped each bag of popcorn with fabric and secured by tying ribbon into bows. I chose three bows because there are three people in our family. I used one of the three bows to attach the tag creating a darling “Welcome Fall” note to our friends and family. I hope that you will think of a creative way to welcome fall!

When I asked Little Bird if she wanted to go to the County Fair to see some animals, her reply was, "Yeah, I wanna see some cows and horses... I need my boots if I am going to see some cows and horses; oh yeah - and my cowboy hat!", I simply smiled and nodded - with logic like that - who could disagree!

I must remind you that Little Bird is only 2 1/2. We walked the Oregon State Fairgrounds that warm July Sunday without a stroller for about three hours taking in all the sights and surprises a County Fair offers including a couple of rides that she was tall enough to ride. And of course, curly fries, a lemonade slushy and a little face paint!!!

In regards to the cowboy hat she required, I had explained that if she wanted to wear it, she must be responsible for it and hold it herself. If she chose not to wear it, that mamma was not going to carry it for her. She agreed and much to my pleasure & delight, she fully upheld her end of the agreement! Proud mamma to say the least. This included making a birdhouse at the Home Depot Workshop for Children!

*Little Bird, you are growing up so dang fast and we are sure having a great time enjoying every moment.

Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Ever heard of PF Changs? It happens to be one of my favorite places to eat whenever I am in Portland! I don’t get there too often, however, their food is amazing and the atmosphere is perfect.

Well, since I don’t get there very often, I thought I would make an attempt at making one of my favorite dishes they serve… Chicken Lettuce Wraps.

So, I went to internet in search of the recipe, they have copycats as well as other versions, so here is one that I thought worked pretty well. I found the recipe on http://www.food.com/.

Ingredients are as follows:

3 tablespoons oil
2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 cup water chestnut
2/3 cup mushroom
3 tablespoons chopped onions
1 teaspoon minced garlic
4 -5 leaves iceberg lettuce

Special Sauce

1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon hot mustard
2 teaspoons water
1 -2 teaspoon garlic and red chile paste

Stir Fry Sauce

2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon rice wine vinegar

Here are the directions for this simple yet tasty treat:

Prep Time: 10 min, Total Time: 25 min,

1. Make the special sauce by dissolving the sugar in water in a small bowl.

Add soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, ketchup, lemon juice and sesame oil.
Mix well and refrigerate this sauce until you're ready to serve.
Combine the hot water with the hot mustard and set this aside as well.
Eventually add your desired measurement of mustard and garlic chili sauce to the special sauce mixture to pour over the wraps.
Bring oil to high heat in a wok or large frying pan.
Sauté chicken breasts for 4 to 5 minutes per side or done. ( you can cook your chicken in advance, let it cool and chop as one of my pictures show)
Remove chicken from the pan and cool.
Keep oil in the pan, keep hot.
As chicken cools mince water chestnuts and mushrooms to about the size of small peas.
Prepare the stir fry sauce by mixing the soy sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar together in a small bowl.
When chicken is cool, mince it as the mushrooms and water chestnuts are.
With the pan still on high heat, add another Tbsp of vegetable oil.
Add chicken, garlic, onions, water chestnuts and mushrooms to the pan.
Add the stir fry sauce to the pan and sauté the mixture for a couple minutes then serve it in the lettuce "cups".
Top with "Special Sauce"

If you missed my first posting about Dutch Babies, I am here for a second round! My family loves these simple yet elegant treats!

Here is the recipe again:

4 eggs
1 cup of flour
1 cup of milk
1/2 stick of butter

Preheat your oven to 375 and let 1/2 stick of butter melt in a 13x9 pan while you mix up the ingredients. Place eggs and milk in blender and mix; once mixed, slowly add in flour. Once completely mixed, remove pan from oven and pour liquid mix into pan. Return to oven for about 20-25 minutes, until you see the baby turning a beautiful brown. Remove and serve with powdered sugar and lemon wedges.

Little Birds' Momma in Action! I work at the State Capitol and this is one of two major events that I plan for! Tribal Government Day honors Native First Foods The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The little girl pictured in the middle was so cute! Afterwards, Governor Kitzhaber gave the royalty princesses each a pencil. They showed the pencils to me and then said, "We should make up a song - I got a pencil, it came from the Governor, we got a pencil, oh yeah!" So cute! A great day and time was had by all!

I thought for an extra treat, I would add a little sparkle (via silver shoes) and of course some sweet chocolate - did I mention that this is my adorable Little Bird?! Yep, she is helping herself to a box of chocolates - a first for her and definitely not her last - she seems to have been born with the hereditary sweet tooth that runs in the family!

Getting your child's hair cut can be a daunting task for many reasons. First, it is the actualization that your child is growing up {sniffle}, the second is that they are usually pretty busy people at the stage where they need a hair cut. Ashlee turned two in November, and though I got her bangs trimmed for a photography session, she had not received any hair cut since she blessed us with her presence.

As you can see from the picture above, she was due for a hair cut! Little girls hair can be so fine and when they are in a car seat, and often "She She" (as she refers to herself sometimes) will get a little matted-nest-mess on the back of her head, that as you can also imagine, is no small task to undue - without the involvement of tears and frustration from both Mom and Little Bird.

Oh but alas,

Upon arriving, we walked in and immediately were pleased, as there was a huge play structue welcoming us in! Ashlee ran over and climbed up to the top and waved from above. Instant satisfaction!

We checked in with the receptionist, who asked us if we were referred by anyone. When telling her I was referred by a friend, she gave us $3 off of our bill and a $3 credit for my friend to use at a return visit. -- SCORE! Can you say, HAPPY CONSUMER!

We had arrived a bit early, so what seemed like no time at all it was our turn to get pretti-fied! The stylist greeted us and asked Ashlee which chair she would like to sit in. She had the choice of a motorcycle, airplane, convertible car or spaceship. She chose the convertible.

Then she was asked what movie she would like to watch on DVD while her hair was being styled. She decided to watch a little Elmo.

The stylist was so nice and attentive to Ashlee. Ashlee sat still and patient and got her cut like she had been doing it since birth - no crying, no wiggling, just pure cuteness.

I dont know about any of you, but that is what really makes me happy -- when she is at peace and happy with what she is presently doing -- I am pleased and know that I am doing a great job as her mom. Did I ever mention how much I love this little bird! Just incase I didnt mention it -- today -- I love her with all of my heart and then some! She gives me such a sense of worth and being, I love being her mom.

One of the reasons that I waited to get her hair cut was that I knew that meant a new stage we were entering and I was going to leave behind the baby/infant hair and walk away with a little girl. It is true, it happened. I am proud of myself, I did not shed a tear through this whole growing experience.

When the stylist finished cutting her hair, she let Ashlee pick out a pretty for her hair and also gave her a little spray of glitter hairspray - who doesnt love glitter!?

And for the sentimentals like me, they also gave me a card that has a place for a photo, a clipping of Ashlee's hair and the date

They carry hair cair products for children that are very good. I purchased the hair detangler and have been very pleased - and we of course bought our own can of glitter hair spray!

A Grandma Always Knows

A few moments and words of advice from Grandma

Today is my 3^rd anniversary and so many things have changed in my life since then - so blessed its crazy!

One thing that has been the hardest for me is losing my Grandma. She was diagnosed with brain cancer the summer before we got married. I realize that weddings are supposed to be all about happiness and the couple, but for this girl and her Grandma it meant something a little extra.

Grandma Teen (Florine Scissons Bedwell) has been my biggest fan, supporter and cheer leader my entire life and I believe she is still cheering me on and helping me through difficult times. As a little girl, I would spend weeks at a time in the summer at her house and she would introduce me to the world of endless reading, travel, camping, crafting and eating treats – she loved chocolate, baklava, and pie!

When I was younger and dating and went through trying times in past relationships, she was the one to always calm my nerves and crazy ideas about being alone the rest of my life. She would say, “Getting married before your 25 is a waste of time, nobody knows who they are or what they want.” “You have plenty of time to meet the right person.” And other sweet comments that only a Granddaughter will accept from her Grandmother – nobody else.

When Darin and I had announced our engagement, she simply smiled and said, “Well, I see what I told you all along was right.” With a twinkle in her eye, I knew exactly what she meant, all the countless conversations on the phone and visits to her house, were in fact, true! She assured me that her health would not detour her from missing one of the most important days of her life -- seeing me get married. [tears flowing].

I was blessed enough to have my Grandma be (just barely) well enough to make a 4 hr. trip and be at our wedding, truly a moment that I will always hold dear to my heart. She passed away in April 2008, just before I had learned that I was pregnant with the Little Bird. I am sure she knows what I am up to and hopefully proud.

On this day Grandma, I miss you more than ever and will always love you and our friendship!

Ashlee Jae turns 2 Woodland Fairy Style

November 19, 2010, the Little Bird turned 2!

In trying to decide what kind of party to plan for Ashlee’s 2^nd party, I went to the websites of party planners extraordinaire Kate Landers, TomKat Studio, Pizzazzerie and a few others looking for ideas/inspiration.

I wanted to do a fairy theme, but not a princess fairy, more a woodland fairy and since the party would be in November, I knew I was looking uphill for ideas per se! Most fairy parties are held outside where the fairies live… duh, right?!

So, thinking cap on, inspiration galore, I went to work. Tulle and ribbon flew madly; silk flowers and star glitter dusted my craft room for a couple of months – all the while looking for ways to make this a birthday party to remember for my precious girl.

Alas, tutus made, fairy wands for each guest put together, wings decorated and face painter hired, I was about ready to go! [*Looking for a face-painter for your party? Try your local fairs, I found ours at the Oregon State Fair].

Save the dates went out – check. Invitations designed, made and sent out – check. Cake ordered by BreakPoint Coffee Company – check. What else? Photographer! I have learned – quickly, the value of a friendly photographer to capture your child’s precious moments! As the parent, you don’t have time to always capture all aspects of a party, do yourself a favor and hire a photographer! I hired the ever so lovely and talented Sandi Lovegrove. She has been kind enough to capture the Little Bird before and I couldn’t be more pleased!

As a matter of fact, it has been hard to decide what pictures to use for this blog post! I have so many wonderful pictures; I will have to do another post – or two!

Making all the décor, food, party favors and such for a birthday ~~can be~~ is a lot of work; however, it is one of the most rewarding projects I have worked on to date! Over the years, I have done many birthdays, showers, and celebration parties, and the pure delight has been getting to imagine, create and hold parties for my little girl! Although it does wet my appetite to do more party planning and decorating!

The party was a huge success for young and younger alike - over 50 people attended and everyone had a great time! Ashlee received some wonderful presents and seemed to really enjoy her Birthday Party. I heard afterwards that little girls were waiving their wands, sporting their tutus and flying around the magical world of fairies for days to come!

So, with this, Happy 2^nd Birthday Little Bird, may you have a wonderful year of excitement and wonder – always know that you are so loved! Love, Momma

Dutch Babies

Not sure why, but during this time of year, I love to cook and bake for my family. I spend Monday's at home with Ashlee and usually try and make something special for our Mommy and Ashlee day at home.

Pancakes, waffles, french toast... sign me up - ALWAYS! Love that stuff! Dont you? Well, here is another yummy to add to your list of must haves... the DUTCH BABY!

Dutch babies are also referred to as german pancakes.

The recipe is so simple:

Hi! I am in the middle of pulling my first post together and wanted to take a minute to thank all of those that have encouraged me to start up a blog! Without the support of my family & friends, this little dream would not be a reality!
